SMS - Short Message Service: available on digital GSM networks allowing text messages of up to 160 characters to be sent and received via the network operator's message center to your mobile phone, or from the Internet, using a so-called "SMS gateway" website. If the phone is powered off or out of range, messages are stored in the network and are delivered at the next opportunity.

How smaller has the world become due to modern communication media? Geographically speaking it's the same but in terms of reach and oneness, Earth has never been this unified before. Advocates of Earth being managed as a single country were laughed at a few years ago. Now with the constant growth of communication spurring globalization, the prospect is being taken, if not more seriously, at least with less scoff. Of this communication boom, the biggest player of course is the Internet. Nothing has shrunk the world better than the world wide web.

What used to be months (even years) of correspondence has been converted to real time conversations thanks to the Internet. Not everything is all about the Internet though as Telecommunications is playing a big part too. Of all telecom's contributions, nothing stands out more than SMS. Yes it may be starting to fade thanks to modern mobile phone deals coming with email and mobile broadband services. However SMS, with its usability and practicality, served as the catalysts of mobile phone communication's growth. Without it very few people would even take notice of the said tech when it was first introduced. Without it globalization could be nowhere near the lofty heights it's in now.
